Meet the Creator

Anita B™ is a culinary artist and owner of Southern Roots Specialty Foods™ based in Northern Virginia. The Mississippi native has always used food as a way to show her love and to make people happy. Her passion and talents for cooking began at an early age.  Anita B’s Mom, Aunt Laura, known for her exceptional cooking skills, would pull a chair up to the kitchen counter and have her young protégé assist in a variety of cooking activities from preparing daily meals for their family to baking delicious cakes and pies for neighbors and friends in her small town community. 

The Benton Family’s legend is that Nita (as she is affectionately called by close family and friends) learned to read a measuring cup long before she could read a book! Soon after graduating from college, the psychology major ditched her career path towards counseling once realizing her homemade Mississippi Butter Cake was a much better recipe for making people happy! The small town girl with the big city smile packed her bags and moved to Washington, DC to study at the well-known French culinary school, L’Academie de Cuisine in Maryland.

Identified early for her talents in creative baking, Anita B™ is known for creating unique flavors deeply rooted in the culinary traditions of southern culture. Granola with Soul™ is Southern Roots’ first specialty food item. Each batch of granola is made with the highest quality ingredients and carefully crafted to inspire distinct flavors highlighting the rich southern cultures of Alabama, Georgia, Louisiana and Mississippi. Anita B’s  favorite saying, “If it’s truly southern, it must have soul!”™
